Description
Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Julien Barrot is the estate's principal red, drawn from very old Grenache on sand.
The Barrot family have farmed at Châteauneuf-du-Pape since the sixteenth century, and Julien Barrot, who gives his name to this bottling, runs the domaine today. The core of the property is at Grand Pierre in the north east of the appellation, an unusual sector of deep sand rather than galets, where a block of Grenache planted around 1900 still produces. Sand ripens fruit differently from the pebbled terraces, giving lighter tannin and more aromatic lift, and the house style follows that: a Grenache led blend completed by Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault, a portion of whole bunches, and élevage in large foudres and demi-muids rather than new barrels. It is a Châteauneuf of perfume and length as much as power.
Full bodied but finely drawn, it works with roast lamb, duck and truffled dishes; serve at around 17 degrees.
