Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure 2023

Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pure is a single variety Grenache from the estate's oldest vines on pure sand.

Pure is made only from Grenache, taken from the domaine's block at Grand Pierre in the north east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the soil is deep sand with almost no pebble cover and some of the vines date from around the turn of the twentieth century. Sandy sites are prized in the appellation for the finer tannin and aromatic lift they give, and because they escaped the worst of phylloxera a number of the oldest plots in Châteauneuf sit on them. Yields from these vines are very small. The wine is fermented without additions and raised in large old wood so that nothing sits between the vineyard and the glass, which is the point of the name; production runs to a few thousand bottles.

Full bodied yet silky and perfumed, it suits roast lamb, game birds and mushroom dishes, and rewards long cellaring; serve at around 17 degrees.
