Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Domaine la Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a Grenache-led red from a family estate with very old vines in the sandy Pignan sector, in magnum.

Domaine la Barroche is run by Julien Barrot at Châteauneuf-du-Pape, on holdings his family has worked for generations, including a remarkable block of very old Grenache in the sandy Pignan sector on the northern edge of the appellation. The estate red is Grenache-led, with Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault filling out the blend from parcels spread across sand, galets and safres so that each soil type contributes something different. A portion of whole bunches is used, fermentation runs on indigenous yeast, and ageing takes place in large wood and concrete rather than new barrel. The style that results is perfumed and silky rather than heavy, a modern reading of a traditional Châteauneuf.

Full-bodied yet supple, it suits roast lamb, game birds and herb-crusted meats; decant and serve at around 17 degrees.
