Domaine La Barroche Liberty 2023

Domaine La Barroche Liberty is the supple, early drinking red from a family with some of the oldest Grenache in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Domaine La Barroche is run by Julien Barrot from a base in the north east of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the family has farmed since the sixteenth century. Its heart is the Grand Pierre sector, sandy ground carrying Grenache planted around the turn of the twentieth century, and the domaine's reputation rests on the perfume and lift that sand gives rather than on weight. Sand warms quickly but holds little, so the vines crop lightly and the wines come out fragrant and fine boned by the standards of the southern Rhône. Liberty is the most approachable wine in the range, Grenache led with Syrah alongside, made for early drinking and raised without new oak so the fruit stays forward and the tannins stay soft.

Medium bodied, juicy and lightly peppery, it suits charcuterie, grilled meats and roast vegetables; serve lightly cooled at around 16 degrees.
