Description
Domaine la Réméjeanne Côtes du Rhône Les Chèvrefeuilles Rouge is the spiciest of this estate's reds, and includes a little of the rarely seen Marselan.
Réméjeanne farms at Sabran in the Gard, on the right bank of the southern Rhône, where limestone soils and a degree of altitude give lighter-framed, more perfumed wines than the appellation's reputation suggests. This certified organic blend comes from hillside vines facing south and east at an average of 250 metres on loess and limestone. Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan make up the bulk, with some old-vine Marselan — a Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache crossing — that Olivier Klein keeps for the acidity it contributes. The grapes are sorted and mostly destemmed before a natural ferment in concrete, though the Carignan goes through carbonic maceration. Little or no sulphur is used during vinification, and the wine spends a year in concrete before bottling. It takes its name from the honeysuckle.
Ready now and good for five or six years. Serve at 16°C with grilled lamb, sausages with lentils or a mushroom ragout.
