Description
Domaine Laroque d'Antan Néphèle Blanc is a co-fermented limestone field blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris with Mauzac and Verdanel, bottled as IGP Côtes du Lot.
The Côtes du Lot IGP covers the Cahors country of the South West and gives growers room to work outside the red-only rules of the appellation. Laroque d'Antan is the estate of Emmanuel Bourguignon, of the soil-analysis family, and the white sits on two hectares of upper slope where fractured Kimmeridgian limestone lies beneath barely 20cm of workable topsoil. The two Sauvignons account for three-quarters of the planting, the Blanc cuttings taken from the limestone and flint vineyards of Dagueneau, Cotat and Vacheron in the upper Loire, with Mauzac and Verdanel making up the balance. In traditional field-blend fashion the grapes are whole-bunch pressed and co-fermented on wild yeasts, a slow process that can run to three months, in a mix of mature barrels and stainless steel. Ageing lasts ten months in used barrels sourced from Domaine Jacques Selosse, and the wine is released with a measure of bottle age.
Drinking well on release and capable of another five years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled whole fish, roast pork or a hard sheep's milk cheese.
