Description

Domaine Laroque d'Antan Nigrine Rouge is a co-planted field blend led by Cabernet Franc and Malbec, bottled as IGP Côtes du Lot rather than Cahors.

The South West has a reputation for rustic, high-alcohol reds, and Nigrine was made to argue the opposite case. The Cabernet Franc and Malbec came as massale selections from Clos Rougeard and Clos Triguedina respectively, with the balance made up of Négrette, Prunelart and Cot à Pied Rouge, all interplanted and picked together as a true field blend. Emmanuel Bourguignon picked on freshness, aiming for purity and delicacy and, in his phrase, to capture the freshness of the rocks; where much of the region comes in at 14 to 15 per cent alcohol, this sits at 12.5. Fermentation took place in concrete tank, followed by eight to ten months in oak barrels between two and five years old sourced from Domaine Dujac. The choice of varieties, precise picking and deliberately plain winemaking are all in service of the limestone terroir.

Drinking well now and good for eight years or so. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck or a mushroom tart.
