Domaine Laroque D'Antan IGP Côtes du Lot Nigrine Rouge 2020

Domaine Laroque D'Antan Nigrine is a field-blend red from limestone country in the Lot, built on Cabernet Franc and Malbec with three older south-western varieties alongside.

The Côtes du Lot IGP covers ground in and around Cahors, and the Bourguignon family — soil scientists as well as growers — farm here with the limestone as their declared subject. Nigrine is a true field blend: Cabernet Franc and Malbec from massale selections taken at Clos Rougeard and Clos Triguedina respectively, with Négrette, Prunelart and Jurançon Noir making up the balance. Emmanuel Bourguignon picks on freshness rather than ripeness, aiming for purity and delicacy, and in a region where 14 to 15 per cent alcohol is common this comes in at 13. Fermentation took place in concrete tank, followed by eight to ten months in oak barrels bought from Domaine Dujac at three to five years of age. The variety choice, picking date and plain winemaking are all directed at the limestone rather than at weight.

Drinking now and good for around eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with duck confit, roast lamb or a mushroom and thyme tart.
