Domaine Laroque D'Antan IGP Côtes du Lot Nigrine Rouge 2021

Nigrine is a true field blend from limestone country in the Lot, led by Cabernet Franc and Malbec and picked to come in at 12 per cent alcohol.

The IGP Côtes du Lot covers land in and around Cahors in south-west France, a region better known for dense, high-alcohol Malbec. Domaine Laroque d'Antan, run by Emmanuel Bourguignon, works in a different register. The vines for Nigrine are interplanted rather than blended after the fact: Cabernet Franc from mass-selection cuttings sourced at Clos Rougeard and Malbec from Clos Triguedina, with a balance of Négrette, Prunelart and Jurançon Noir. Bourguignon picks on freshness, aiming for purity and delicacy and, in his words, to capture the freshness of the rocks, which is how the wine finishes at 12 per cent in a district where 14 to 15 is common. Fermentation takes place in concrete tank, followed by eight to ten months in oak barrels bought from Domaine Dujac at three to five years of age. The variety choice, picking and plain cellar work all serve the limestone site.

Approachable now and good for eight to ten years. Serve at 16-18°C, lightly cool, with charcuterie, roast lamb or grilled vegetables.
