Domaine Marc Sorrel Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2023

Domaine Marc Sorrel Crozes-Hermitage Rouge is a peppery northern Rhône Syrah from the appellation around the hill of Hermitage.

Tain-l'Hermitage is home to this small, traditional domaine, best known for its Hermitage, Le Gréal in particular. Marc Sorrel ran it for many years and his son Guillaume is now involved. These vines sit on the flatter alluvial and glacial terraces below the hill, where deep gravel and clay give classic Syrah aromatics in a more approachable frame. Some ferments include whole bunches, the cuvaison is long, and the wine spends around a year in used casks, since new wood is not the house style.

Dark fruit and pepper, with blackberry, olive and a smoky finish over firm, supple tannin. Decant half an hour ahead and serve at 16–18°C with grilled meat, sausages or roast lamb.
