Description
Domaine Merlin Bourgogne Blanc is a white Burgundy from the Maconnais, made by a family that did as much as anyone to persuade the world that this part of Burgundy could be taken seriously.
Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking on a run down property and rebuilding it into one of the reference estates of the Maconnais; their son Theo now works alongside them. The regional Bourgogne appellation covers the whole of Burgundy and is the broadest of its classifications, which makes it the place where a good grower's habits show most plainly, since everything depends on how the vines are farmed and how the wine is handled rather than on the prestige of the address. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and given a long elevage on lees, the sort of treatment once reserved for the Cote d'Or.
A useful all rounder for roast chicken, fish, soft cheeses and simple weekday cooking, best served at around 11 degrees.
