Description
Domaine Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse is a white Burgundy from the village where the domaine itself is based, in the hills north of Pouilly-Fuisse.
Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking on a run down property and rebuilding it into one of the reference estates of the Maconnais; their son Theo now works alongside them. The Macon appellation allows a number of its villages to add their own name to the label, a recognition that the better slopes give something more than the generic bottling. La Roche Vineuse lies in the northern Maconnais, its vineyards planted on limestone and clay slopes that sit higher than much of the region, which helps the fruit keep its freshness. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and given a long elevage on lees, the sort of treatment once reserved for the Cote d'Or. Wines like this made much of the modern case for the Maconnais.
A good match for roast chicken, pork, goat's cheese, or fish off the grill, and best served at around 11 degrees.
