Domaine Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes 2022

Domaine Merlin Mâcon La Roche Vineuse Vieilles Vignes is a white Burgundy drawn from the domaine's oldest plantings in its home village.

Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking on a run down property and rebuilding it into one of the reference estates of the Maconnais; their son Theo now works alongside them. Vieilles vignes simply means old vines, a term with no legal definition in France but real meaning in practice: older plants carry smaller crops, root more deeply and tend to ride out hot or dry seasons better than young ones. La Roche Vineuse lies in the northern Maconnais on clay and limestone slopes, higher and a touch cooler than much of the region. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and given a long elevage on lees, the sort of treatment once reserved for the Cote d'Or. The old vine cuvee is usually given the longer time in barrel of the domaine's Macon bottlings.

Serve at around 12 degrees, with roast chicken, pork belly, richer fish or a plate of hard cheese.
