Description
Domaine Merlin Saint Véran Côte Rôtie is a white Burgundy from an appellation that wraps around Pouilly-Fuisse in the far south of the region.
Saint-Veran was created in 1971 and takes in vineyards across several communes at the southern end of the Maconnais, some to the north of Pouilly-Fuisse and some to its south, on limestone slopes that run down towards the Beaujolais border. It is Chardonnay only, and at its best it offers much of what Pouilly-Fuisse does at a gentler price. Olivier Merlin and his wife Corinne arrived at La Roche Vineuse in 1987, taking on a run down property and rebuilding it into one of the reference estates of the Maconnais; their son Theo now works alongside them. This bottling comes from a named parcel within the appellation. The whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in barrel and given a long elevage on lees, the sort of treatment once reserved for the Cote d'Or.
Best served at around 11 degrees, with grilled fish, roast chicken, salads or goat's cheese.
