Description
Montée de Tonnerre is widely held to be the finest of Chablis' Premiers Crus, and Moreau-Naudet's hectare sits within its Chapelot lieu-dit.
The vineyard lies on the same right-bank slope as the Grands Crus, with a sandy, rocky topsoil over Kimmeridgian limestone, the fossil-rich marl that gives Chablis its cut. Chapelot is separated from Grand Cru Les Blanchots only by a narrow ravine, which explains why wines from this corner so often approach Grand Cru weight. The domaine works two contiguous plots here, one of 50-year-old vines and a second more recently replanted. Moreau-Naudet has become one of the more closely watched addresses in the appellation for a style built on low yields, ripe fruit and long, patient élevage in a mixture of tank and used barrel rather than new oak. The result is concentrated, layered and firmly mineral.
Give it a few years and drink through the next decade. Serve at 10 to 12°C with scallops, roast chicken or a gruyère tart.
