Description
Lamarche's Clos de Vougeot comes from 1.35 hectares split across three separate areas of the walled grand cru, all picked together and co-fermented.
The Clos de Vougeot covers around fifty hectares behind its medieval wall and is shared among dozens of growers, so position within the Clos matters as much as the name on the label. The Lamarche parcels sit in three of them: two small plots in Montiotes Hautes at the top of the Clos near the château, one in the central Petits Maupertuis on the Vosne side, and one lower down near the RN74 at Baudes Basses. All three are harvested at the same time and co-fermented in open-top wooden vats. The result is a finer and prettier reading of the Clos than most, very Vosne-like in style, though the terroir still asserts itself with more power and more mineral, savoury structure than the domaine's other cuvées.
Give it five to eight years and expect it to run twenty. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, roast venison or Époisses.
