Domaine Nicole Lamarche Grand Cru La Grande Rue 2019

La Grande Rue is a 1.65-hectare grand cru monopole of the Lamarche family, running between La Tâche on one side and La Romanée-Conti on the other.

The vineyard dates back to the fifteenth century and is the second smallest of the Vosne-Romanée grand crus after La Romanée. Its position is remarkable even by the standards of that village: it borders La Tâche directly to the south, of which it is effectively a continuation, and La Romanée-Conti, La Romanée and Romanée-Saint-Vivant to the north. The site came into Lamarche hands in 1933 and has been a family monopole ever since. It is often described as a prettier, more delicate version of La Tâche, though it arguably sits closer in character to its northern neighbours; Clive Coates has called it a more feminine wine than La Tâche and closer to Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and Allen Meadows notes that its ageing curve most resembles that vineyard too. Comparisons only go so far, and it has a clear personality of its own.

A wine for the long haul, best from eight years and holding for twenty-five. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pheasant, beef Wellington or aged Comté.
