Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Grande Montagne 2019

La Grande Montagne is an isolated premier cru high on the Chassagne slope, one of the highest vineyards in the commune.

The site sits above Les Grandes Ruchottes and at roughly the same level as La Romanée, on the sweeping band of chalky terres blanches that runs north towards the grand cru vineyards. Pillot works just 0.26 hectares here, with vines of more than thirty years. Altitude and pale, chalky soil give a Chassagne that leans towards Puligny in character, with floral aromatics and a taut, cool structure rather than obvious flesh. Wines from the vineyard may also be bottled under the name Tonton Marcel, though the domaine labels its own by the site. Production is tiny, at two barrels in some seasons, and fermentations here tend to be long and languid, which adds complexity to the finished wine.

Worth three to five years in the cellar; serve at 10-12°C with grilled white fish, crab or a young hard cheese.
