Domaine Paul Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée 2022

La Romanée is widely held to be the finest premier cru in Chassagne-Montrachet, and it is the wine Paul Pillot regards as the estate's greatest.

Local lore has it that the Romans planted the first vines here, which is where the name comes from. The vineyard sits high on the slope, and the Pillot parcel is at the very top: rocky, sunny and sheltered from wind. Where neighbouring Les Grandes Ruchottes and La Grande Montagne give airy, lifted wines, La Romanée works from the bedrock up. The family's 0.49 hectares were planted by Thierry Pillot's grandfather more than 70 years ago, and there is next to no topsoil above the limestone. Altitude, aspect, old vines and stone together give a wine of unusual concentration and mineral depth, closer in scale to the grand crus above than to a typical premier cru. Winemaking is the same restrained approach used across the domaine's premiers crus.

Best given five years and capable of fifteen; serve at 10-12°C with lobster, roast bresse chicken or a rich fish in cream.
