Description
Les Grandes Ruchottes is a 2.13-hectare Chassagne premier cru so rarely bottled that few drinkers have met it, yet it ranks among the village's finest sites.
Its position explains much: it lies between La Romanée and Les Caillerets, on roughly the same line as Le Montrachet, at about 260 metres with a south-east aspect and marly, limestone-rich soils. Ramonet works over half the vineyard, labelling it simply Ruchottes, while Paul Pillot farms 0.26 hectares at the very top of the hill where the topsoil is extremely thin. With so few growers involved, the vineyard has never built the profile its quality deserves. The wine is open and expressive early, with a twist of smoky reduction, considerable finesse and purity, bright stone-fruit and pithy character, and a long savoury close.
Drinking well from two or three years and good for a decade; serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a fresh soft cheese.
