Domaine Paul Pillot Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Pitangerets 2022

Les Pitangerets is a Saint-Aubin premier cru from half a hectare of Paul Pillot vines approaching their sixtieth harvest.

Saint-Aubin lies in the fold of the hill behind Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, and its premiers crus have become one of the more reliable sources of serious white Burgundy without grand cru pricing. Pitangerets has poorer, stonier ground than the neighbouring Le Charmois, and it usually gives a firmer, more savoury wine, though the gap between the two narrows in riper seasons. Some growers label the same fruit under the adjoining and easier-to-pronounce climat of Les Combes. Pillot is a Chassagne domaine with a settled, restrained cellar approach across its whites, favouring measured lees work and a light hand with new oak. The wine here is dense and layered, rich at the outset but tightening across the palate, with a sappy line running through to the finish.

Drinking well from two years and holding for eight or so; serve at 10-12°C with scallops, roast chicken or a creamy gratin.
