Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu 375ml 2022

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu is a four-parcel Viognier from the granite terraces of the northern Rhône, in a half bottle.

Condrieu covers a scatter of terraced sites on decomposing granite along the right bank of the Rhône, and its wines are among the most distinctive whites in France: aromatic, textured and rarely built for long ageing. Pierre Gaillard farms across the appellation and blends this bottling from four parcels on the terraced slopes of Côte Bellay, Les Patasses at Malleval, Boissey at Chavanay and La Caille in Condrieu proper. Each of these sites shares soils of fine, decomposing granite, which gives the wine its lift. Yields were held to around thirty hectolitres per hectare and the wine spent seven months in oak, of which ten per cent was new. What marks Gaillard's whites is the way intense aromatics and a ripe, hedonistic texture sit alongside bright mineral refreshment. Here that shows as honeysuckle and macerated peach, generous flesh, buoyant acidity and a long, stony close.

Drink young while the aromatics are at full stretch. Serve at 10-12°C with apricot-glazed pork, roast chicken or a ripe Saint-Marcellin.
