Domaine Pierre Gaillard Condrieu Blanc L'Octroi is the domaine's top Viognier, drawn from a single hectare on a steep granite slope at Malleval.

Condrieu is the Viognier appellation of the northern Rhône, a narrow run of terraced granite south of Vienne where the variety was almost lost in the mid-twentieth century before a handful of growers brought it back. Pierre Gaillard has been central to that revival and holds vines across several of the appellation's better sites. L'Octroi comes from one hectare on a steep, sandy, granitic slope at Malleval, just south of Condrieu itself. Yields here run low, around thirty hectolitres per hectare, which concentrates the fruit without pushing it into heaviness. The wine was matured for eight months in Allier and Nevers oak with only five per cent new wood, so the barrel works as texture rather than flavour. The style is built on small white flowers and peach blossom, a controlled and refreshing palate, and a finish with real structure and a smoky, granite-derived mineral undercurrent. Power and finesse arrive in equal measure.

Best from release through the next five or six years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, scallops or a mild Thai curry.
