Description
Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie is a co-fermented Syrah and Viognier drawn from schist and gneiss sites at both ends of the appellation, offered in magnum.
Côte-Rôtie occupies steep terraces above Ampuis at the northern tip of the Rhône, where Syrah may legally be co-fermented with a small proportion of Viognier. Gaillard's blend is 90 per cent Syrah and 10 per cent Viognier, taken from the schist soils of Fongeant and Viallière in Ampuis and from a parcel on gneiss at Semons, in the south of the appellation. All the fruit was picked by hand with a strict selection so that only the best bunches and berries entered the blend. It was completely destemmed, given a five-day pre-fermentation soak and then worked with regular punch-downs. The wine spent eighteen months in barrique, a third of them new, and was bottled without filtration. The style leans to the Côte Blonde in this release, with vibrant dark fruit, smoky black olive and a fine tannin frame.
Allow at least six months in bottle for the elements to knit, then drink over a decade; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, beef or grilled mushrooms.
