Description
Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie is a northern Rhône Syrah co-fermented with a small portion of Viognier, drawn from schist at Fongeant and Viallière and gneiss at Semons.
Côte-Rôtie occupies the steep, terraced right bank of the Rhône above Ampuis, where Syrah may legally be co-fermented with up to 20 per cent Viognier. Pierre Gaillard has been a central figure in the modern northern Rhône, with holdings across Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph. This bottling is 90 per cent Syrah and 10 per cent Viognier, taken from the schist soils of Fongeant and Viallière in Ampuis together with a parcel on gneiss at Semons, in the south of the appellation. Fruit is picked by hand with a strict sorting, then fully destemmed. Vinification begins with a five-day cold soak before regular punch-downs, and the wine is raised for 18 months in barrique, around a third of it new, before bottling without filtration.
Give it six months in bottle for the parts to knit, then drink over the next decade; serve at 16–18°C with roast duck, braised beef cheek or hard mountain cheese.
