Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre comes from a single steep hectare of forty-year-old vines in Côte Rozier, at the heart of the Côte Brune.

Côte Rozier is a warm, amphitheatre-shaped site on schist just below the famous La Landonne. Its many stone walls are known for retaining heat, which magnifies an already sunny microclimate and helps explain the depth and structure of the wines grown here. Pierre Gaillard, who built his estate across Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph and Condrieu, farms this parcel by hand, as the gradient demands. The fruit is entirely destemmed before crushing, and the cuvée ages for eighteen months in Allier and Nevers barrels, mostly new; the concentration of the fruit absorbs that oak without difficulty. Rose Pourpre, or purple rose, is traditionally the most brooding and palate-staining of Gaillard's Côte-Rôtie bottlings, though it has never been a brawny wine, and the schist gives it lift alongside the density.

Best given three to five years and good for a decade beyond; serve at 16–18°C with roast beef, venison or a mature hard cheese.
