Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre 2022

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Côte-Rôtie Rose Pourpre comes from a single steep hectare of schist in Côte Rozier, immediately below La Landonne.

Côte-Rôtie occupies the granite and schist slopes above Ampuis at the northern tip of the Rhône, where Syrah is grown on terraces too steep to work by machine. Rose Pourpre, the purple rose, is drawn from 40-year-old vines in Côte Rozier, a warm amphitheatre-shaped site in the heart of the Côte Brune. The many stone walls that hold the terraces in place also store heat through the day and release it at night, magnifying an already sunny microclimate and going a long way to explaining the depth and structure the site delivers. Harvesting is by hand and the fruit is destemmed before crushing. The wine matures for 18 months in Allier and Nevers barrels, mostly new, a level of oak this concentrated cuvée absorbs readily. It is traditionally the most brooding and palate-staining of the domaine's Côte-Rôties without ever tipping into heaviness.

Best given five years and good for fifteen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, peppered venison or slow-cooked lamb shoulder.
