Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Blanc 375ml 2022

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Blanc, in a 375ml half bottle, is one of the very few northern Rhône whites made entirely from Roussanne.

Saint-Joseph runs along the right bank of the Rhône on granite slopes, and its whites are usually a blend of Marsanne with a little Roussanne. Single-variety Roussanne is rare even in the Rhône, with perhaps ten producers in the region who do not blend the two. Pierre Gaillard, based at Malleval, took the idea from a tasting of old-vine Châteauneuf early in his career. The fruit comes from several low-yielding sites in the far north of the appellation: the relatively cool granite plateau of Malleval at Les Dries, the slopes of Malleval at Chartres, and Les Vessettes in Chavanay. The wine spends eight months in used Allier and Nevers barrels bought from growers in Chassagne and Pouilly-Fuissé, which builds a creamy texture while keeping the savoury structure that stops the richness running away.

Drinking well on release and good for four or five years; the half bottle suits a table for two. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, pork with fennel or a soft washed-rind cheese.
