Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 1.5L MAGNUM 2020

Clos de Cuminaille is a walled, east-facing Saint-Joseph vineyard at Chavanay that Pierre Gaillard bought in preference to a slice of Côte-Rôtie's La Turque, here bottled in magnum.

Saint-Joseph stretches along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and Chavanay, at its northern end, lies closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon. The Clos is a three-hectare walled site on pure granite with an easterly aspect, catching morning sun and cooling through the afternoon, and it has long been considered one of the finest parcels in the appellation. Gaillard's vines here are now over thirty years old. Vinification matches the domaine's regular Saint-Joseph save for a larger share of new oak, around forty per cent, which is well absorbed by the concentration of the site. The magnum format, with its lower ratio of oxygen to wine, slows development and suits a Syrah of this cut for long cellaring.

Drinkable young but a magnum of this will repay eight to twelve years. Serve at 16-18°C with a shoulder of lamb, roast duck or aged hard cheese.
