Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille is a single-vineyard Syrah from a walled, east-facing site on the pure granite of Chavanay, bottled here in magnum.

Saint-Joseph stretches along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its best vineyards sit on granite around Tournon, Mauves and Chavanay. The Clos de Cuminaille is one of the most privileged: three hectares behind old walls, facing east, which Gaillard bought in preference to a parcel of what is now the celebrated La Turque in Côte-Rôtie, a site he had helped plant. The vines are now more than thirty years old. Winemaking is the same as for the estate's regular Saint-Joseph but for a touch more new oak, a well-integrated quarter here. The wine is reliably the more textural and polished of the pair, showing pulpy plum and pastille fruit, grilled herbs and the sappy spice of the northern Rhône. Magnum format favours slower, steadier development.

Drinkable young and worth cellaring five to ten years in this format; serve at 16–18°C with slow-roast lamb shoulder, mushroom ragout or aged Comté.
