Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 2019

The Clos de Cuminaille is an east-facing, walled three-hectare vineyard on the pure granite of Chavanay, and one of the most privileged sites in Saint-Joseph.

Saint-Joseph runs some fifty kilometres down the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its quality varies with the slope, so a named clos of this standing counts for a great deal. When Pierre Gaillard bought this site he passed up the chance to buy a slice of the now-renowned La Turque vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, a vineyard he had helped to plant, because he judged Clos de Cuminaille the better piece of land. The vines are now over thirty years old. Winemaking follows the domaine's Saint-Joseph rouge closely, with hand harvesting, destemming and ageing in Allier and Nevers barrels, save for a touch more new oak, at around 40 per cent, which the wine carries comfortably.

Drinking well from three years and good for a decade; serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, peppered steak or a mature hard cheese.
