Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 2020

Clos de Cuminaille is a walled, east-facing Saint-Joseph vineyard at Chavanay that Pierre Gaillard bought in preference to a slice of Côte-Rôtie's La Turque, a site he had helped to plant.

Saint-Joseph runs for some fifty kilometres along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its northern end around Chavanay sits closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon in the south. The Clos is a three-hectare walled site on pure granite, facing east so that it takes the morning sun and cools through the afternoon, and it is regarded as one of the most privileged parcels in the appellation. The vines are now more than thirty years old. Winemaking follows the domaine's regular Saint-Joseph almost exactly, the difference being a slightly larger proportion of new oak, around forty per cent, which the fruit weight of the site carries without difficulty. The result is a Syrah of clear granitic definition rather than sheer scale.

Approachable young but built to reward five to ten years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck breast or a peppered steak.
