Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille is a walled, east-facing vineyard on the granite soils of Chavanay and one of the most distinctive sites in the appellation.

Saint-Joseph runs for some fifty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its best sites are granite slopes in the northern communes, Chavanay among them. When Gaillard bought this three-hectare clos he passed up the chance to buy a slice of the now-renowned La Turque in Côte-Rôtie, a vineyard he had helped plant, because he thought Clos de Cuminaille the better site. The vines are now more than thirty years old. Winemaking is the same as for the estate's regular Saint-Joseph apart from a touch more new oak, a well-integrated quarter in this release. The result is more textural and polished than the standard cuvée, pulpy and layered with plum and pastille fruit, grilled herbs and the sappy spice of the northern Rhône, and it carries the freshness of the season rather than the power of a hotter year.

Approachable young and good for five to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with lamb cutlets, char-grilled beef or a peppery salami.
