Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille 2022

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille is a walled, east-facing vineyard on the pure granite of Chavanay.

Saint-Joseph runs some 50 kilometres along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its quality varies as widely as its length; Clos de Cuminaille is one of the sites that has always been held apart. The three-hectare clos faces east on decomposed granite, and Pierre Gaillard bought it in preference to a slice of what became the La Turque vineyard in Côte-Rôtie, a site he had helped to plant. He simply judged Cuminaille the better piece of land. The vines are now more than 30 years old. Winemaking follows the estate's other Saint-Joseph closely, with the difference being a little more new oak, around 40 per cent, which the fruit carries without difficulty.

Drinking now and better still with four to eight years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with slow-roasted lamb, beef ribs or a peppercorn-crusted steak.
