Description
Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Clos de Cuminaille is a single-vineyard Syrah from a walled, east-facing site on the pure granite of Chavanay, here in a half-bottle.
Saint-Joseph runs for some 50 kilometres along the right bank of the northern Rhône, and its finest sites sit on granite around Tournon, Mauves and Chavanay. The Clos de Cuminaille is among the most privileged of them: a three-hectare walled vineyard facing east, which Gaillard chose over the chance to buy a slice of the now-famous La Turque in Côte-Rôtie, a vineyard he had helped plant. The vines are now more than thirty years old. Winemaking follows the domaine's regular Saint-Joseph, with the single difference of a little more new oak, a well-integrated quarter in this release. The result is consistently the more textural and polished of the two, with the pulpy plum fruit, grilled-herb lift and sappy northern Rhône spice that mark the site.
Approachable young and good for five to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with grilled lamb cutlets, charcuterie or roast root vegetables.
