Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 2020

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge is assembled from steep granite parcels in the northern reaches of the appellation.

Saint-Joseph stretches for some sixty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and the northern end behaves quite differently from the south. Pierre Gaillard's parcels lie in the high country of Malleval, Chavanay and Limony, closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône. These are steep, cool sites with a good deal of granite in the soil, which is where the mineral cut and floral perfume of the wine come from, while the spread of altitudes and aspects gives the blending options that keep the wine consistent from one year to the next. Each parcel was destemmed and vinified separately, then aged mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for eighteen months and bottled unfiltered, with the emphasis on transparency rather than extraction.

Immediately engaging, with the structure to develop over about ten years. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb, peppered beef or roast eggplant.
