Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge is Syrah from the granite hills at the northern end of the appellation, around Malleval, Chavanay and Limony.

Saint-Joseph stretches some 50 kilometres down the right bank of the northern Rhône, and the character of a wine depends heavily on which end of it the fruit comes from. Gaillard's parcels are in the high country of the far north, closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône, on steep, cool slopes with a good deal of granite in the soil. That granite is behind the mineral cut and perfume of the wine, while the spread of altitudes and aspects gives Gaillard blending options that account for its consistency from year to year. Each parcel is destemmed and vinified separately. Ageing runs for 18 months, mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels rather than new wood, and the wine is bottled unfiltered.

Engaging on release and will improve over five years or more. Serve at 16°C with grilled lamb cutlets, peppered beef or roast eggplant.
