Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 375ml 2021

Domaine Pierre Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge is a granite-grown northern Rhône Syrah from the far north of the appellation, in half bottle.

Saint-Joseph runs some sixty kilometres along the right bank of the Rhône, and its character shifts markedly from end to end. Gaillard's parcels sit in the high country of Malleval, Chavanay and Limony, closer to Vienne and Condrieu than to Tournon-sur-Rhône in the south. The slopes are steep and cool with a great deal of granite, which gives the mineral cut and perfume this wine is known for, while the range of altitudes and aspects gives him blending options that account for its consistency year to year. Each parcel was destemmed and vinified separately, and the wine was aged mostly in used Allier and Nevers barrels for eighteen months before being bottled unfiltered. This is the 375ml format.

Open and engaging on release, with five years or more of improvement ahead. Serve at 16-18°C with grilled lamb cutlets, peppered steak or roast eggplant.
