Description
Domaine Pierre Labet Bourgogne Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes is a red Burgundy from older vines, made under the region's broadest appellation by a grower better known for grander addresses.
The regional Bourgogne appellation applies across the whole of Burgundy and sets little beyond the grape, which is why wines at this level stand or fall on who made them. Domaine Pierre Labet is based in Beaune and is run by Francois Labet, who also directs Chateau de la Tour in the Clos de Vougeot; the domaine carries his father's name. The vineyards are farmed organically. Vieilles vignes means old vines; the term has no legal definition in France, but older plants carry smaller crops and root more deeply, which shows in the concentration of the fruit. Fermentation includes a proportion of whole bunches, extraction is gentle, and the wine is raised largely in used barrels so that oak does not intrude.
Serve at around 15 degrees, slightly cool, with charcuterie, roast pork, coq au vin or mushroom dishes.
