Domaine Pierre Labet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2021

Domaine Pierre Labet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Rouge is a whole-bunch village wine from three lieux-dits totalling 0.6 hectares.

Gevrey-Chambertin is the biggest commune of the Côte de Nuits and its village wines vary widely with the site; here the fruit comes from La Justice on the north-east side, Les Crais to the south-east and Jouise to the south-west, the last lying just below Mazis-Chambertin. The vines are well over sixty years old, which is what the vieilles vignes designation refers to, and the three plots are co-vinified rather than blended after ageing. François Labet, who also runs Château de la Tour in Clos de Vougeot, is a committed user of whole bunches, and 45 per cent of the fruit went into the vats uncrushed. The wine was matured in 25 per cent new oak barrels, giving a classically structured Gevrey with fine, mineral-edged tannins and a concentrated dark-cherry finish.

Approachable from three or four years and good for a dozen. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, beef bourguignon or aged Comté.
