Description
Domaine Pierre Labet Gevrey-Chambertin Vielles Vignes is a red Burgundy from the largest and one of the most famous wine communes of the Cote de Nuits.
Gevrey-Chambertin holds nine grand crus, more than any other village in Burgundy, headed by Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Beze; the village added the name of its best vineyard to its own in 1847, a habit soon copied up and down the Cote. Its wines are traditionally the most structured of the Cote de Nuits, grown on deeper, marl rich soils at the mouth of the Combe de Lavaux. Domaine Pierre Labet is based in Beaune and is run by Francois Labet, who also directs Chateau de la Tour in the Clos de Vougeot; the domaine carries his father's name. The vineyards are farmed organically. Vieilles vignes means old vines, which carry smaller crops and root more deeply. The wine is fermented with a share of whole bunches and raised in oak barrels with restrained use of new wood.
A wine for roast beef, game, duck and strong cheeses, served at about 16 degrees, and one that repays several years in the cellar.
