Description
Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Doux Le Loin de l’Oeil is a sweet white made from an all-but-forgotten local variety the family brought back from near-extinction.
Gaillac, in the South West, is one of France’s oldest vineyard areas, and for decades the Plageoles family has worked to revive its indigenous grapes. Loin de l’Œil is one of them; the name means far from the eye, the eye being the bud, and refers to the long stems that hold the bunches away from the shoot. Farming is organic. When the fruit reaches phenolic maturity, the team pinches the stem at the top of each bunch, arresting ripening and concentrating both sugar and acidity on the vine. The harvest is whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally in old oak barrels made from the nearby Grésigne forest. Residual sugar lands at around 120 g/L, held in balance by extract and a spicy, tangy finish, so the wine reads as sweet and savoury rather than merely rich. Bottled at 500ml.
Drinking well now and capable of a decade or more. Serve at 8-10°C with apricot tart, foie gras or a wedge of roquefort.
