Description
Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Doux Mauzac Roux is made from one of the seven members of the Mauzac family the estate has preserved, and is the driest of its sweet wines.
The Plageoles family farms organically at Gaillac and has built its reputation on the region’s indigenous varieties, none more so than Mauzac, of which it maintains seven distinct types. Mauzac Roux is picked in three passes through the vines, and in years with strong botrytis roughly half the crop comes in botrytised. Yields are tiny either way, around 25 hl/ha of golden juice in an average year. At about 80 g/L residual sugar this is the least sweet wine in the range, and it is the only one fermented and matured entirely in cement tank rather than oak. The result carries honey, nectarine and citrus marmalade tang, with a silky texture cut by crisp acidity. It tastes drier than the analysis suggests while remaining viscous, with layers of citrus oil and candied botrytis character.
Drinking well now and holding for eight to ten years. Serve at 8-10°C with pears poached in white wine, apple tart or a mild blue cheese.
