Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Muscadelle 2018

Domaine Plageoles Gaillac Muscadelle is a sweet white made mainly by passerillage, the fruit left to raisin on the vine.

Gaillac, in the South West of France, is one of the country's oldest vineyard areas and holds a collection of grape varieties found almost nowhere else; the Plageoles family have spent decades recovering them. Muscadelle, familiar from its supporting role in Bordeaux, is the most recognisable of the five sweet styles they make. This one comes from a parcel of forty- to sixty-year-old vines on schist and clay, cropped at a very low fifteen hectolitres per hectare. The fruit is dried on the vine, with some botrytis in certain years, and the wine is vinified and aged in old oak demi-muids, finishing at around 200 grams per litre of residual sugar. Phenolic grip from the extended handling counterbalances the fruit weight, and the acidity keeps the whole thing from sitting heavily.

A sweet wine that will keep for many years and needs only a small glass. Serve at 8-10°C with lemon tart, roquefort or a plate of foie gras.
