Description
Cuvée de l'Abeille comes from half a hectare in Les Epointures, a Gevrey-Chambertin site sitting below Clos-Prieur and near Chapelle-Chambertin.
L'Abeille means honeybee, and the cuvée is one of the village wines in the Ponsot range, a domaine long associated with Morey-Saint-Denis and with an unusually late-picking, low-yield approach. The Epointures parcel was replanted after the 2012 vintage using mass-selection cuttings at the high density of 11,000 vines per hectare, and this is only the second release since. While the new vines establish themselves, only the best fruit from the site goes into this bottling and the remainder is declassified into the house's Bourgogne rouge. The position, on the lower slope beside some of Gevrey's better Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, gives more flesh and refinement than the village designation suggests, and the wine shows the deep, pure-fruited style the estate is known for.
Drink from three to eight years; serve at 16–18°C with roast lamb, duck or mushroom dishes.
