Description
Domaine Ponsot Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée de l'Abeille comes from half a hectare in Les Epointures, replanted at very high vine density.
L'Abeille means honeybee, and this is one of the newer wines in the Ponsot range. The source is half a hectare in Les Epointures, a well-placed village site sitting under Clos-Prieur and close to Chapelle-Chambertin, so the neighbourhood is a good deal grander than the label suggests. The vineyard was replanted after the 2012 vintage using massale cuttings at 11,000 vines per hectare, an unusually tight spacing that pushes the vines to compete and keeps yields modest. For now Ponsot uses only the best fruit from the site in this cuvée and declassifies the remainder into the domaine's Bourgogne rouge. The house approach is unchanged here, with gentle extraction and ageing in well-used barrels, and the result is a fine, juicy Gevrey built on finesse rather than weight.
Already drinking well and will hold for five to eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, mushroom dishes or a good steak.
