Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin 2019

Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin comes from a 0.47-hectare parcel replanted in 1990, on some of the poorest and rockiest ground in Gevrey.

Chapelle-Chambertin sits on the lower side of the grand cru band in Gevrey-Chambertin, below Clos de Bèze, and is generally the most perfumed and least ponderous of the Chambertin family. Ponsot's first domaine bottling dates back to 1970. The vines lie in the Gémeaux lieu-dit, which borders Cherbaudes, and in En la Chapelle, which in turn borders En Griotte. Soils here are particularly poor and rocky, and typically produce a wine of pronounced minerality and long life rather than early flesh. Jasper Morris has noted that the cuvée now sees a longer cuvaison but with less extraction and lower fermentation temperatures, a change that suits the site: the wine keeps its grand cru frame while gaining transparency, and the domaine's use of neutral oak leaves nothing between the drinker and the vineyard.

Give it eight to ten years, with two decades of life beyond. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, hare or mushroom-rich dishes.
