Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin 2022

Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Chapelle-Chambertin comes from 0.47 hectares in the Gémeaux lieu-dit, a wine the estate first bottled in 1970.

Chapelle-Chambertin lies on the lower, flatter side of the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru band, below Clos de Bèze, and takes its name from a chapel built in the thirteenth century and destroyed after the Revolution. Ponsot's parcel is in Gémeaux, which borders Cherbaudes and En la Chapelle and in turn En Griotte. The soils here are notably poor and rocky, and the wines they give tend towards mineral definition and longevity rather than early weight. The vines were replanted in 1990. Recent vintages have seen a longer time on skins with gentler extraction, which has added flesh without coarsening the tannin. The 2022 was aged for eighteen months in oak barrels averaging twenty years of age and bottled unfiltered.

Structured and slow to open, it wants eight years or more; serve with roast beef, hare or a mature washed-rind cheese at 16 to 18°C.
