Domaine Ponsot Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2019

Domaine Ponsot Clos de Vougeot Vieilles Vignes comes from two small holdings in the upper and middle sections of the walled grand cru, first offered by the domaine in 1999.

Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru of the Côte de Nuits at roughly 50 hectares, and because the slope falls away from the château down towards the main road, the position of a grower's parcel matters more here than almost anywhere. Ponsot's holding runs to a tiny 0.4 hectares in Petit Maupertuis on the upper slope, very close to Grands-Échezeaux, plus a smaller parcel of old vines in Quatorze Journaux below the central part of Château de la Tour's vines. Both are in the better half of the Clos. The vines average 50 years and consistently give a massive, rich and powerful wine, the most structured of the domaine's range after the Clos de la Roche, which is where the family ranks it in price as well.

Needs a decade and will run for twenty-five years or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, game birds or braised oxtail.
