Domaine Ponsot Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Vieille Vignes Blanc 2019

Domaine Ponsot Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes Blanc is the only premier cru in Burgundy made entirely from Aligoté, from a monopole of ancient vines.

Morey-Saint-Denis is a red-wine village, and for a long time this was its only premier cru white; Dujac now makes a white Monts Luisants too, but not from the Clos. The vineyard is a Ponsot monopole high on the slope. Small quantities of Chardonnay and Pinot Gouges, a white mutation of Pinot Noir, have appeared in the blend at various points in its history, but from 2004 the wine returned to its origins as pure Aligoté, drawn mostly from a selection of vines planted in 1911. Since 2015 a parcel of younger fruit has made up about 15 per cent of the blend, bringing the average age down to roughly 90 years. The grapes are pressed in the domaine's vertical press, fermented in both tank and barrel, and aged in wholly neutral barriques between 10 and 60 years old.

A wine to cellar: give it five years and expect it to run for twenty. Serve at 10-12°C with poultry in cream sauce, grilled crayfish or a mature comté.
